Silver Clay Classes

Silver Clay is very similar to potters clay, it can be sculptured into many forms and shapes, but once fired when all the water and binder is removed you are left with 0.999 fine silver, it's unbelievable until you see it.

On the 17th March I was joined by Ann-Marie Perry and Kit Lee. Here are some pictures of what they made. Neither Ann or Kit had used Silver Clay before and both produced some nice pieces!

Made from a silicon mould

I demonstrated how to make jewellery using cutting tools and stencils, then moving on to making silicon moulds, replicating buttons etc.  We also looked at finishing with Liver of Sulphur to add colour and depth to the piece.

If you would like to experience working with Silver Clay please see our courses page for details. We have one day courses and 3 day courses available.

Following on from yesterday's interview with BBC Radio Lancashire on the morning of the UK Budget 2012, Delia and Janet were interviewed again this morning to get their reaction to yesterday's Budget.

If you missed the first interview which was broadcast yesterday morning prior to the 2012 Budget, then you can hear it again below:

What did you think of yesterdays Budget, will it help you? Will it allow you to pursue more of your interests or make it more difficult from a financial point of view?

Janet

The Jewellery Maker – October 2010

Two local business women and keen silversmiths have joined forces to open a new jewellery making facility at White Cross Industrial Estate in Lancaster.

The Jewellery Maker runs one-day events, courses and workshops in silver jewellery making, silver clay, beading, casting and stone setting. The courses are targeted to an individual’s particular skills from the beginner right up to the accomplished jewellery maker. The facilities are also available on an hourly basis at drop in workshops, for more experienced silversmiths who no longer need tuition.

The premises include professional work stations equipped with all the tools required to produce beautiful hand made jewellery. Silver, beads, silver clay and stones can be purchased at very competitive prices and are usually bought on a project-by-project basis. There is also a facility for students to display and sell items they have made.

The courses will be taught by Janet Fraser, a jeweller with many years experience. “I have been designing and creating jewellery for over 15 years and I’m really excited about this new venture,” Janet says. “Our aim is to teach the traditional methods of jewellery making using original techniques. We want to provide a friendly meeting place for people to come and unleash their creativity. I’m looking forward to being able to pass on some of my enthusiasm to others and providing a happy and friendly atmosphere to work and learn in.”

The person behind the idea for The Jewellery Maker is Delia Hamer who established  a successful local ironing business, Ion, in 2005.  She now concentrates all her energies and time to The Jewellery Maker.

“I became interested in silver jewellery making three years ago and joined a friend on the jewellery making class at The Adult College.  Her passion for jewellery making grew and she decided to look for premises to set up a business in  jewellery industry.  She heard that the unit next door to Ion was becoming available because a silversmith was moving out so I approached Janet and The Jewellery Maker was born. It must be fate!”

Welcome to The Jewellery Maker

Welcome to The Jewellery Maker, a friendly meeting place for anyone wanting to learn or develop their skills in jewellery making.  Come and join one of our courses, learn a new hobby, make new friends and unleash your creativity.  It’s great fun!

We offer courses in Silver Smithing, Silver Clay, Wirework, Macrame and Beading.  Our courses are targeted to your particular skills, whether you’re a beginner, or a more accomplished jewellery maker looking for suitable facilities to design and make your pieces.

We offer professional, well-equipped work stations and provide all the tools you need, to produce beautiful hand made jewellery.

"Helping you bring your creative ideas to life".
